The Line Is … Truth
The struggle to understand truth is as old as philosophy itself. In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, shadows are mistaken for reality. Centuries later, the Enlightenment placed reason, evidence, and inquiry at the center of our understanding of knowledge. Hannah Arendt examined how political power can undermine factual truth, while Daniel Boorstin explored how manufactured events shape public perception.
Today, the post-truth condition challenges not only what we believe, but the authority of facts themselves. Propaganda, repetition, and the manipulation of information blur the distinction between evidence and belief. Artificial intelligence further complicates the question of authenticity, making fabricated evidence more convincing and genuine evidence easier to dismiss.
The Line Is … Truth explores the tension between truth and its deliberate distortion. The line represents truth. Through letterpress printing, it is pressed into the paper, leaving a physical impression—a mark that remains even when the truth it represents is challenged, obscured, or denied.
The work asks us to consider the relationship between evidence and belief, and whether the persistence of truth is enough to ensure its recognition.
